What is energy?
The ability to cause or stop motion and create forces. Energy is a scalar quantity measured in Joules (J).
What is Mechanical Energy? Provide an example.
Any type of potential or kinetic energy. Ex: any movement, such as cars, walking, and roller coasters.
What is potential energy?
Energy due to position above ground. The potential energy is greater the higher it is, and the more mass and object has.
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed or transmitted.
What is the equation for kinetic energy and what is it measured in?
Kinetic energy is measured in Joules (J).
KE=1/2mv2
Describe Electrical Energy. Provide an example.
Electrical energy is energy from the movement of electrons—ex, lightning, static electricity, and current electricity.
What is sound energy?
Energy that comes from a vibrating source and moves through matter (not space), like solids, liquids, and gases.
Give the equations for potential energy, height, gravity, and mass.
PE in Joules: mgh
M in grams: PE/(gh)
G in m/s2: PE/(mh)
H in meters: PE/(mg)
What is work?
The transfer of energy through force.
What is the equation for Mass in Kinetic energy and what are the units?
Mass is measured in grams (g).
M=(KEx2)/v2
What is chemical energy? Provide an example.
Energy that is stored in chemical bonds, or energy that is released or absorbed during chemical reactions. Ex: energy stored in food, plants, batteries, petroleum, biomass, and natural gas.
What is radiant energy? Provide at least three examples.
Light energy. Energy from the entire electromagnetic spectrum. This is energy that can travel in any vacuum, such as space. Ex: Radio waves, gamma waves, TV rays, microwaves, UV light, visible light, X-rays, and infared.
What is Kinetic energy?
The energy of motion. An object must be moving to have kinetic energy. It is dependent on the mass of an object and magnitude of velocity.
What is the equations for work, force, and distance?
WORK IN JOULES: W=FD
FORCE IN NEWTONS: F=W/D
DISTANCE IN METERS: D=W/F
What is the equation for velocity in Kinetic energy and what are the units?
Velocity is measured in meters per second (m/s).
V=
Describe gravitational energy. Provide an example.
Energy due to position based on height and mass. Ex: Lifting any object so that it can fall back to earth.
What is thermal energy?
The energy from vibrating atoms and molecules. All matter is constantly moving except at absolute 0 (-273 degrees celcius/-459.67 degrees Fahrenheit). Friction causes thermal energy as well. Ex: the hotter something is, the greater the movement of molecules.
What is Fission? Provide an example.
The splitting of an atom. Ex: the type of atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
What is power?
How fast you do work/transfer energy.
What is elastic energy? Provide an example.
Energy from the distortion of an object. It is stored when an object is stretched or compressed, and is released when the object returns to its normal shape. Ex: springs, trampoline, bent diving board, bow and arrow
What is nuclear energy?
Energy from an atom's nucleus decaying or undergoing fission/fusion.
What is fusion? Provide an example.
Atoms smashing together to form new elements. Ex: occurs in the sun.
Provide the equations for power, time, and work.
POWER IN WATTS: P=W/T
TIME IN SECONDS: T=W/P
WORK IN JOULES: W=PT
