What is the ultimate source of energy for the Earth?
The Sun
Where is food made in a plant? (be as specific as possible...)
In the chloroplasts, which are located in the leaves of plants.
What is the function of vascular tissue?
to move fluids and nutrients through the plant
What are three methods of pollination utilized by plants?
Wind, Animal, and Insect pollination
What is an organism called that makes their own food?
An Autotroph
What are the REACTANTS for photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O)
(and solar energy from the sun)
What is the function of the flower of a plant?
To attract pollinators, houses the reproductive parts of the plant
What does the xylem transport, and where?
Water from the roots up to the rest of the plant
Why might a flower be brightly colored and/or have a sweet scent?
To attract pollinators and increase their likelihood of reproducing
Gas exchange between plant tissues and the atmosphere occurs in the leaf of a plant, the major organ of photosynthesis, through what?
Stoma (plural is stomata)
What are the PRODUCTS of photosynthesis?
Glucose (C6H12O6) and Oxygen (O2)
What is name of the pigment that allows a plant to absorb energy from sunlight?
Chlorophyll
What does the phloem transport, and where?
What are the female reproductive parts on a flower called?
Pistil
What is the outer layer of a plant cell?
Cell Wall
The process of photosynthesis is a physical change or chemical reaction (pick one)
Chemical reaction
Why did the spinach leaves rise to the top of the beaker
Oxygen was produced as a by product of photosynthesis, causing the spinach leaves to rise to the top of the beaker
True or false: Nonvascular plants include the largest and most advanced type of plants.
FALSE
What are the male reproductive parts on a flower called?
The stamen
Define transpiration.
When water leaves the plant through a stoma and turns into water vapor in the environment.
What is the EXACT formula for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O (sunlight) ---> C6H12O6 + 6O2
How are rhizoids different than roots?
Rhizoids are thin rootlike structures that anchor the plant and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Allow nonvascular plants to grow on a variety of tough surfaces.
Roots are typically expansive, with a number of different branches and fibers. They help to anchor the plant in the soil so it does not fall over. Roots function is to bring water from the ground to the rest of the plant
How do nonvascular plants transport water and nutrients?
From cell to cell
Describe some qualities a plant that depends on wind pollination might exhibit.
-No bright colors, special odors, or nectar.
-Small.
-Most have no petals.Stamens and stigmas exposed to air currents.
- Large amount of pollen. Pollen smooth, light, easily airborne.
Why do leaves change color in the fall?
plants go into the equivalent of hibernation: they shut down most of their metabolic function and live off of food stores accumulated during the summer. The first step in this process is to get rid of their leaves.
In the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor. These pigments are already present in leaves, but are typically masked by chlorophyl.
