The Continental Drift Hypothesis contains an explanation for how the continents move. True or False?
False
The Theory of Plate Tectonics includes an explanation for how the plates are moving. True or false?
True
What was the name of the most recent major supercontinent (when all the continents were together)?
Pangaea
What is the difference between lava and magma?
Lava - above ground
Magma - underground
On the Richter scale, how much more powerful is a level 6 earthquake compared to a level 5 earthquake?
10
What does the continental drift hypothesis say?
That the continents used to be together, and have drifted apart from each other over time
What type of boundary is shown here?
Transform
What kind of boundary is shown here?
Convergent
At what kind of boundary are most volcanoes?
Convergent boundary (main answer)
OR Divergent
At what kind of boundary do the deepest kinds of earthquakes occur?
Convergent
What was the name of the scientist who came up with the Continental Drift Hypothesis? (Spelling counts!!!)
Alfred Wegener
What kind of boundary is shown here?
Divergent
How do the location of most earthquakes support the theory of plate tectonics?
They mostly occur on fault lines
Name and describe one of the eruptive products/effects of eruption.
Lava flow - slow moving lava
Ash fall - ash in the atmosphere, and falling down from atmosphere
Mudflows - lahars, mud flowing down mountain from melted snow/ice
Pyroclastic flow - fast moving avalanche of hot gas, ash, and rock
Transform
Why didn't other scientists believe in the Continental Drift Hypothesis?
Alfred Wegener didn't have an explanation for how it worked.
What is a convection current?
In a substance, warm things rise and cool things fall, creating a circular current in the substance. Like in a glitter lamp.
Which two plates/continents created the Himalayan mountains?
India/Asia
Indian/Australian Plate and Eurasian Plate
How can large eruptions, like if Yellowstone erupted, cause the climate to change?
Ash can block the sun, and wind can move the ash around the world. This can lower temperature around the world.
What kind of fault is shown in the image?
Strike-Slip
Name and explain one piece of evidence scientists used to support the Continental Drift Hypothesis
AWV
Fossils on different continents
Glacier pieces on warm continents
Matching mountains across the Atlantic Ocean in USA and Europe
Continents fit together like puzzle pieces
How do volcanoes support that plate tectonics is still occuring?
Volcanoes are formed when one plate subducts below another, and the created magma pocket rises and creates volcanoes. It also makes them erupt, and we wouldn't have erupting volcanoes if we didn't have plates moving underneath others.
How do tectonic plates move across the Earth's surface?
Convection currents in the Earth's mantle push/pull on the tectonic plates
What two things determine whether an eruption is quiet or violent?
Silica content and amount of dissolved gases
What is the name of the kind of wave that travels through liquids and solids
P-Waves or Primary Waves
