Symbolism
As there is thunder, the TV repair man says the remote is so good it can put you in the show, a type of symbolism.
Both Pleasantville and The Giver are first seen with perfect weather. As thunder occurs, something after causes the people of Pleasantville to freak out.

Bud’s co-worker at the restaurant complains that his life “never gets any better or any worse; it’s always the same.” Something that repeats daily.
What is a routine?
As "colored" people are being treated differently, it alludes to something that many people in history have tried to get rid of. Antonym for equality.
What is racism?
During geographic class, something about their streets are different to "Mary's" world. Something that means repeating and never-ending.
What is a loop?
Something that the people and Montag felt as they learned about their life's, and thought about them.
What is growth?
In the courtroom in Pleasantville, Bud suggests to his father that perhaps it’s not just the cooking and cleaning that he misses about his wife, but maybe it’s something deeper and more meaningful.
