What is this poem about?
My pig won’t let me watch TV.
It’s totally unfair.
He watches anything he wants
but doesn’t ever share.
I never get to watch cartoons
or anything like that.
He’s busy watching farming shows.
I should have got a cat.
I should have got a goldfish
or a guinea pig or goat.
Instead, I’ve got this pig
who’s always hogging the remote.
My pig won't let me watch TV
Groups of lines in a poem are called
Stanzas
What sense is the author talking about?
The green bean was delicious,
what a yummy thing to eat.
It made me feel adventurous
and so I tried a beet.
Taste
What is the MOOD of this poem?
Sunday’s somewhat melancholy.
Monday’s slightly sad.
Tuesday’s quite disheartening.
Wednesday’s just as bad.
Thursday’s filled with gloominess.
Friday’s rather glum.
I wish it didn’t take a week
for Saturday to come.
Sad/Gloomy/Bad
What is this poem about?
Today I managed something
that I’ve never done before.
I turned in this week’s spelling quiz
and got a perfect score.
Although my score was perfect
it appears I’m not too bright.
I got a perfect zero;
not a single answer right.
Getting a zero/failing a quiz
Three or more words that all begin with the same sound
Alliteration
What sense is the author talking about?
I’m not too fond of music
but there’s simply no denying
I like the sound of honking horns
and little babies crying.
What is the TONE of this poem?
My parents have canceled our summer vacation.
We won’t take our road trip and travel the nation.
We’re staying at home for the total duration,
and will not be leaving this single location.
They said that the name of this strange situation
is something that’s known as a family “staycation.”
Upset/Angry/Mad
What is this poem about?
I have a bunch of batteries
I need to give away,
and if you’d like to have them,
you can get them all today.
I didn’t want to throw them out.
They’re yours to take instead.
I probably should warn you, though,
these batteries are dead.
I have a lot of tiny ones.
A few of them are large.
And you can have them all right now,
completely free of charge.
Words that make a sound
Onomatopoeia
What sense is the author talking about?
Your fingertips can hold your hips,
but shouldn’t slip between your lips.
Why, you can even rub your rear,
but hands should not go near your ear.
Touch
What is the TONE of the poem?
Every meal I eat includes
more, and more, and more fast foods.
Yet with every meal I eat
I grow slower on my feet.
This is why I want to know
why does fast food make me slow?
Slow/Full/Tired/Sluggish
What is this poem about?
Don’t play baseball with your Brussels sprouts
or tennis with tomatoes.
Don’t play soccer with your succotash
or ping-pong with potatoes.
Don’t play hockey with your hot dogs.
Don’t go bowling with your beans.
Don’t play racquetball with rump roast.
Don’t play tag with tangerines.
When you’re sitting at the table
just enjoy your mother’s cooking,
and refrain from playing with your food,
except when no one’s looking.
Don't play with your food
When the sensory details in a poem create a picture in your mind
Imagery
What sense is the author talking about?
It has the aroma of freshly-baked bread
with hot melted butter and blackberry spread,
and maybe the breeze of a warm afternoon,
that follows a thunderstorm early in June.

Thankful/Silly/Funny
What is this poem about?
This morning when foolish Fiona awoke
she looked at her mother, and said with a croak,
“I can’t go to school, so please write me a note
to tell them I’m home with a frog in my throat.”
Her mom wrote a note for the teacher that said
“My daughter is sick and she’s staying in bed.
She won’t be at school for the rest of the week.
She swallowed a polliwog down at the creek.”
A frog did not want to go to school
When there is a word or phrase repeated throughout the poem
Repetition
What sense is the author talking about?
I gazed at the gazellephant.
I gawked at the gooseal.
I caught the cockroachimpanzeebra
and the bumblebeel.
Sight
What is the MOOD of this poem?
My kitten won’t stop talking.
She just prattles night and day.
She walks around repeating
nearly everything I say.
My kitten never says, “Meow.”
She never even purrs.
She mimics me instead
in that annoying voice of hers.
She waits for me to speak,
and then she copies every word,
or begs me for a cracker,
or says, “I’m a pretty bird.”
I’m not sure what to do, and so
I simply grin and bear it.
She’s been this way since yesterday;
that’s when she ate my parrot.
