In An Artists Studio purpose?

Caught up in his model's idealized loveliness, the artist seems to have missed (or disregarded) the "sorrow" of the living woman in front of him. This is a poem about objectification: in seeing his model only as a beautiful dream-girl, the artist overlooks her humanity.

A prayer for my daughter purpose:

he wants his daughter to be blessed with beauty, but not too much beauty—to be attractive to men, but not so attractive that men become "distraught" at the sight of her or that she herself can't stop looking in the mirror.

The New Colossus purpose:

relates to immigrants' hopes and dreams of better lives. The Statue of Liberty stands as a welcoming guide to the "huddled masses" and "those yearning to be free." She is a symbol of peace, comfort, and compassion.

200

Harlem sweeties purpose:

reflects the post World War II state of mind of many African Americans. The Great Depression was over, the war was over, yet for African Americans the dream, whatever particular shape it took, was all the while being deferred.

The Weary Blues Purpose:

The power and pain of black art. The poem describes a black blues singer playing in a bar in Harlem late into the night, whose music channels the pain of living in a racist society.

300

Ulysses and the siren purpose:

Ulysses (Odysseus) resists the bewitching song of the sirens by having his ship's crew tie him up, while they are ordered to block their own ears to prevent themselves from hearing the song.

300

Tears, idle tears purpose:

recollects the memory of his loved one after seeing the scenic beauty of Tintern Abbey. Each of the elements of the place reminds him of the person. After reading the poem, it becomes clear that the person he is thinking of is no more.

The Sun Rising Purpose:

the speaker wants to bend the rules of the universe. Rather than allowing the sun's "motions" across the sky to govern the way the speaker spends his time, the speaker challenges the sun's authority and claims that love gives him (the speaker) the power to stay in bed all day with his lover.

She walks in beauty purpose:

Through his discussion of the woman's mind and body, it seems that Byron is expressing that it is the combination of inner and outer beauty that makes this woman stunning. Additionally, Byron emphasizes that purity and innocence contribute to the inner beauty of a woman.

400

Strawberries Purpose:

captures a moment of immensely vivid memory, with Morgan recalling an afternoon of freedom and passion eating strawberries and making love.

The New Colossus

Emma Lazarus

Harlem Sweeties

Langston Hughes

Ode on a grecian urn purpose:

examines the close relationship between art, beauty, and truth. For the speaker, it is through beauty that humankind comes closest to truth—and through art that human beings can attain this beauty (though it remains a bittersweet achievement).

500

Song of myself purpose:

an ode to individuality and originality. As the end of the poem suggests, Whitman is not to be defined or tied down. He is immortal in the sense that even after he dies, his matter will meld into the earth, growing forth so many leaves of grass.
