Forms of Poetry
A short poem that praises an individual, idea, event, or thing.
Ode Poem
I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse.
Hyperbole
A rhyme that occurs internally, or within a single line.
Internal Rhyme
A rhyme that occurs at the end of two consecutive lines.
End Rhyme
When someone says something, but means the opposite of what they say.
Verbal Irony
A 3 line poem that originated in 17th century Japan.
Haiku
Dina's donuts don't get dry in the desert.
Alliteration
Comparing two things using 'like' or 'as'
Simile
A word that represents a sound and resembles or imitates the sound.
Onomatopoeia
Series of words or phrases that all (or almost all) start with the same sound.
Alliteration
A short, musical verse that conveys powerful feelings and emotions of the poet.
Lyric Poem
Your smile is brighter than the sun.

Giving human-like qualities to something that is not human.
Personification
Contradictory terms in conjunction (next to eachother).
Oxymoron
A poem that is meant to mourn or lament the loss of someone.
Elegy Poem
She runs like a cheetah.
Simile
The use of an object, figure, event, or situation to represent something else or stand in place for something else.
Symbolism
When a word or phrase is repeated multiple times, typically for emphasis.
Repetition
When the author describes a scene, attempting to play on the reader's senses.
Imagery
A poem that uses a visual presentation to increase the effect on the reader.
Concrete Poem
Chocolate is my achilles heel.
Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without actually mentioning it explicitly.
Allusion
The writer or author's attitude or feelings towards something.
Tone
A dramatic, over-exaggerated statement that is not meant to be taken literally.
