What is a a.) prose and b.)verse?
An elaborately structured poems praising or glorifying an event or individual
What is an ode?
Language that appeals to the five senses and shows the reader the scene instead of just telling
What is imagery?
Rhyme at the end of poetic lines.
What is end rhyme?
A comparison of two items using direct wording (is, was, has). She has a heart of gold, but it's a recipe for disaster.
What is metaphor?
A poem that contains characters, conflict, plot.
What is a narrative poem?
When you read to the end of the sentence, not just the poem line
What is enjambment?
A type of verse that has a regular rhythm (beat), typically iambic pentameter, but doesn't necessarily rhyme.
What is blank verse?
Saying something is bigger, smaller, worse, or better than it actually is. She scared me to death.
What is exaggeration / hyperbole ?
words or phrases that reappear at the beginning of stanzas or at key shifts in the poem
What is anaphora?
This is a comparison of two unlike things that goes on for a stanza or even the entire poem.
What is extended metaphor?
A group of 4 lines that contain the same rhythm, number of syllables, and perhaps all rhyme.
What is a quatrain?
Two terms. The dictionary definition versus the associated feeling of a word or phrase.
What is denotation and connotation?
Two Terms: The author's attitude toward the character, the subject, or the audience (versus) the vibes or emotion evoked for the audience by the text.
What is tone and mood?
The repetition of vowel sounds in consecutive lines of poetry. Example: high tide, mighty, mind
