If a youth is being interviewed as a victim, police may request to speak with the youth alone and provide victims services to support the youth during their interview. A youth is refusing to take their prescribed psychotropic medication, what do you do?

Youth have the RIGHT to refuse their prescribed medications. As a staff, you can encourage them to take their medication and explain the possible side effects to them, but we cannot force the youth to consume their meds. If a youth refuses, staff are to contact the pharmacy and alert them that the youth has refused their medication and ask for further instructions. An IR will also need to be completed outlining the refusal and sent to a supervisor. The CSW should also be alerted.

In case of negative side effects, staff should monitor the youth's health and contact medical services as required. Any emergent medical needs due to medication refusal, will need to be dealt with as would any emergent medical concern. An SOR would need to be conducted in this instance.

Staff should remember to document an "R" for refusal on the Medication Administration Sign Off form.
