How did the industrial revolution provoke the globalization of sports?

With the industrial revolution came increased leisure time for people who would have otherwise spent their day tending a field. Using Britain as an example, after their industrial revolution many recreational clubs were founded by factories and churches to entertain workers. As sports became more and more popular, professional football clubs were formed, and gained income from paying spectators. Other European countries took notice and football became widely popular on a global scale.
