In the book Fight Club, the narrator is shot and ends up in a mental hospital, and it is unclear what will happen next. The story feels open and unfinished, and Project Mayhem may still continue.
In the movie Fight Club, the narrator shoots himself to get rid of Tyler Durden. He survives, and the buildings explode as planned while he watches with Marla. This ending is more clear and final.
