You manually spin the wheel by kicking the wheel. Momentum is built up to then be used to spin the wheel.
What is Kickwheel?
Very strong clay that is tough to work with. It is a very pure clay and is often white. It is hard to work with because it is flimsy and may warp during firing, but it is strong and nonporous when fired.

What is Bat?
Very wet clay used to adhere clay pieces together or decorate clay.

Made from fine particles of soil, minerals, and rocks.
What is Pottery Clay?
Most wheels used today are this type. They come in various forms with their own features. A peddle is pressed and electricity spins the motor automatically for us.

When the clay has no moisture in it.

The term used for making a pot on the wheel.
What is Throwing?
When attaching two pieces of clay, you must do this. By making x marks on the clay it welds them together. Slip then must be applied.

Typically made with some plastic and is very rigid to maintain its shape.
What is Sculpture Clay?
This is manually controlled with your feet, but with a pedal that must be pushed repeatedly to keep the wheel spinning. It is similar to old sewing machines.
What is Treadle?
When clay has less moisture in it. It is hard and brittle, but still malleable.
What is Leatherhead?
Kneading the clay to get all the air pockets out.
What is Wedging?
A special paint that goes over clay that has been fired once. When in the kiln it melts onto the clay. This can lead to a glossy or matte finish.
