An electric, hand-held power tool with a round metal saw which is used for cutting wood, lumber, and other materials.
A highly versatile saw that is used to make accurate crosscuts and miters in a workpiece by positioning a mounted blade onto a board. It is great for cutting molding and making precision cuts.
Compound Miter Saw
A type of electric sander that has an electric motor that turns a pair of drums on which a continuous loop sandpaper is mounted. It is good for heavier stripping of surface material.
Handheld Belt Sander
A type of saw with a circular blade, mounted on an arbor, that is driven by an electric motor and protrudes through the top of a table. The table supports the material being cut. This tool can be used to rip or cut larger pieces of wood.
Table Saw
A versatile cutting machine consisting of a circular saw mounted on a sliding horizontal arm that can be used to make a variety of cuts, including dado cuts, rabbet cuts, and to make half-lap joints. These machines are not very popular anymore, but they do exist in some shops.
Radial Arm Saw
A stationary or bench top power tool designed to bore precise holes in wood, metal, or other materials.
Drill Press
A tool used to take small amounts of wood off of the edge or surface of a board by shaving it in increments.
Electric Hand Planer
A woodworking tool that makes slots in adjoining pieces of wood where a compressed wooden biscuit is inserted and glued into both pieces, thereby making a strong bond between the two boards.
Biscuit Joiner
A type of electric saw in which the cutting action is achieved through a push-and-pull motion of the blade. It is frequently referred to as a Sawzall, which was the name of the original manufacturer. It is useful for demolition projects and cutting out old doors and windows.
Reciprocating Saw
A hand tool with a rotating chuck driven by an electric motor that us designed to take an assortment of tools for drilling, grinding, and polishing.
Power Drill
An old invention that is still used today, this is a power tool that rotates wood stock for shaping spindles, turning bowls, making balusters and many other uses.
Lathe
A woodworking machine used to produce a flat surface along a board's length that helps prepare it for being joined with another board.
Jointer
A handy pneumatic device that converts power from an electric motor into potential energy stored as pressurized air in a tank. It can be used to power a variety of tools including nailers, paint guns, impact wrenches, and inflation tools.
Air Compressor
A power tool that works with a variety of shaped cutters bits, and stencils that is used in carpentry for making grooves, pockets, decorative moldings, and signs.
Router
A heavy-duty power tool designed to handle large carpentry projects such as framing houses and roof trusses.
Framing Nailer
A machine that has a flat circular disk faced with sandpaper that is used for smoothing wood surfaces, such as a length of lumber.
Disc Sander
A hand-held power tool which sands back and forth. It is useful for medium stripping of old finishes and paint.
Palm Sander
Although it looks similar to a power drill, this is a tool that is used for driving in fasteners, screws, and lag bolts. It has a clutch inside that prevents it from stripping the fasteners and screws.
Impact Driver
A type of sander that is mounted on a spindle that both rotates and oscillates up and down along the axis of the spindle. It is good for sanding curves and contours (like on guitar and instrument bodies) that would be difficult to sand by hand.
A handheld electric saw which uses a reciprocating blade to cut irregular curves, such as stenciled designs, in wood, plastic, and Plexiglas.
Jigsaw
A power saw with a long, sharp blade consisting of a continuous band of toothed metal stretched between two or more wheels to cut material. It is good for making curved cuts.
Bandsaw
A thin bladed saw that allows woodworkers to cut intricate curves and corners. Advanced users can make inlays for musical instruments, dovetail joints, and other types of decorative shapes.
Scroll Saw
A hand-held, portable power tool that accepts a wide range of interchangeable blades, which can be use to sand, cut, scrape, grind and polish. It is useful for irregular jobs such as cutting away floor molding or plunge cutting rotted sill plates.
Oscillating Tool
A heavier-duty vacuum that is useful for cleaning up shop waste and sawdust.
