My friend and I are meeting for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.  My house is 1.3 miles away from the restaurant.  My friend's house is 1.225 miles away.

Who's house is closer to the Cheesecake Factory?  Explain how you know.

My friends house is closer.

Since we are both a little over one mile away, I need to compare the decimals.  225/1000 is less than 3/10, which is equal to 300/1000.  I could also look at just the tenths place and see that 2 tenths is less than 3 tenths, so she doesn't have as far to go.

At the swim meet, three fifth graders were competing in the 50 m free style.  The results are below:

Mario: 2.15 minutes

Luigi: 2.1 minutes

Peach: 1.875 minutes

Who came in first, second and third? Explain.

1. Peach

2. Luigi

3. Mario

Peach swam fastest because she was in the one minute range while the others took two minutes or more. Comparing, Mario and Luigi, they both have 1 tenth of a second.  Moving to hundredths, Luigi had 0 hundredths while Mario had 5.  So, Mario's time is greater, which means he came in last.
