Discuss some of the factors that led to the end of feudal society.
New farm equipment increased the amount of farmable land, enabling the production of sufficient food to sustain large armies and a growing number of townspeople. As the military strength of the townships grew, invaders were less likely to attempt to take by force what they could get through trade. Trading towns and cities gradually replaced manors as the centers of economic activity. As a result, may serfs moved from manors to towns. Trade that developed during the Crusades also prompted a shift away from feudalism.
