A student is attempting to kick you while laying on the ground. What should you do next? Is this a situation where you would use CPI?

Provide space to the student and support them where they are at. While on the ground they are not in an emergency situation and CPI should not be used.

*Bonus! This would be a great opportunity to help them ask for a break.*

300

True or False

The recovery room can only be used when a staff initiates the break.

False.

A student can initiate the use the recovery room as a break space.

400

Seclusion and Restraint should only be used in cases of emergency. Define emergency.

Give some example of an emergency that MIGHT require the use of seclusion/restraint. (At least 3)

Emergency means serious, probably, imminent threat of bodily injury to self or others with the present ability to effect such bodily injury.

Examples of emergency include: Elopement from the Building,  hitting/punching, hair pulling, biting, kicking while standing, excessive pinching or scratching, throwing furniture, breaking an object to use as a weapon, severe self injurious behavior, etc.

400

What goes in your locker?

(Hint: There are three!)

Medications and Supplements (No exceptions).

Items you wish to keep secure from students and others.

Cellphones (Recommended)

400

You've searched your assigned area.

What do you say?

"_________ is clear"

400

A student has run from the building and their protocol does not allow them to leave school grounds. Would you use Ukeru or CPI?

It depends on the kid.

More than likely this would not be considered an emergency situation and CPI should be used.

400

If the recovery room is used for a staff-initiated break, seclusion or restraint then...

the student should complete a restorative processing sheet and review the sheet with the staff before returning to class

(ALL students should be completing these sheets with their staff member unless otherwise directed by Ms. Bumgardner)

500

You have administered a seclusion. The student has laid on the ground and told you to suck a goldfish. What should your next step be and why?

Open the door.

When the student is no longer in an emergency situation where they are a serious, probable, and imminent threat of bodily injury to themselves or others then the seclusion should end. Even if you know the student may escalate again.

500

Define active supervision

Visually watching/scanning, interreacting with the student and providing the expectations.

500
What is your search location?

What do you do if you cannot search your location?

_________________

Let support staff know over channel two that you cannot search you assigned area

500

False.

A CPI restraint should not be used for spitting.

500
