In 1906 Navada Taylor was raped, leading to a famous and important court case.

Explain this story:

A woman named Nevada Taylor was attacked and raped in Chattanooga, TN. She didn’t see her assailant, but someone accused a black man, Ed Johnson, of being the attacker. Johnson is caught and jailed by Sheriff Joseph Shipp. Johnson is found guilty by a highly biased jury and sentenced to execution by hanging. The case is appealed and goes all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court “stays” the execution on appeal, and in response Sheriff Shipp leaves a lone guard on duty who allows a mob into the jail and lynches Johnson. The Supreme Court then opened a new case - U.S. vs. Shipp - and found Shipp guilty of not only allowing, but “aiding and abetting” the lynching to occur.

Homestead Strike. Tell us the story.

Workers at the Homestead Steel Mill in Pennsylvania were being overworked and underpaid.

Carnegie left to Scotland to let his business partner, Frick, deal pretty harshly with the workers.

The workers got together to start a union, but they were threatened to be fired by Frick. The union went on strike and barricaded the plant.

Frick hired a force of 300 Pinkerton agents who fought the mill workers.

3 Pinkertons and 7 Mill workers were killed.
