Solids, liquids, and gases.
What is evaporation?
Change from liquid to gas.
Bleach was mixed with another cleaning product, which resulted in the formation of a gas. Is this a physical or a chemical change and why?
Chemical change, because a new substance (the gas) was formed from a reaction between the bleach and the cleaning product.
What is matter?
Everything that takes up space (has volume) & has mass (weight).
Why does water droplets appear on an icy drink on a hot day?
Water vapor in the air condenses into liquid water.
A silver earring turns black. Is this a physical or a chemical change and why?
Chemical change - the silver oxidized (rusted) and formed a new substance.
What are solids?
Solids are matter that doesn't change volume depending on the container and holds its shape.
What is the change you observe in dry ice?
Sublimation.
Water from the ocean evaporated and then condensed in the atmosphere, forming clouds and eventually rain. Is this a physical or a chemical change and why?
What is the state of matter where there is no definite shape but definite volume?
Liquid.
What is the change from a gas to a solid?
Deposition.
I mixed oil with some water, resulting in a mixture with small floating bubbles. Is this a physical or a chemical change, and why?
Physical change, because no new substance was formed (water and oil did not interact at all). The oil can be separated from the water if the mixture is allowed to sit for a long time.
What does it mean when gases have no definite volume?
It means that gas spreads when outside of a container, therefore occupying a different amount of space.
When an ice cube melts, did the ice release or absorb heat?
The ice absorbed heat.
What is the name of a new solid substance formed in a chemical reaction between two liquids?
Precipitate.
