The amount of matter in an object
What is mass?
The amount of space an object takes up.
What is volume?
How tightly packed the atoms in an object are.
What is density?
A property that you can observe WITHOUT changing the object
What is a physical property
A change that creates a new substance that was not there in the beginning.
What is a chemical change?
The amount of gravitational force on an object
What is weight?
List the 2 possible methods to calculate volume.
What is the formula (L x W x H) or the displacement method?
List the formula for calculating density.
What is D=m/V?
The ability to form rust
A change that keeps the identity of a substance the same.
What is a physical change?
An astronaut weighs 150lbs on Earth. He needs to know if his weight will change on the moon. Explain your answer.
What is, his weight will decrease since gravity is weaker on the moon?
A bookcase is 7 feet tall, 3 feet long, and 2 feet wide. Calculate the volume of bookcase (Watch your units!!)
What is 42 ft3?
List the 2 potential units you would need to use when calculating density.
What is g/cm3 or g/mL?
List 2 chemical properties and 2 physical properties.
Examples: C: Flammability, Ability to Rust, Reactivity, Toxicity, etc.
P: Color, Odor, Texture, Solubility, etc.
there is no new substance being formed. The gas you see is simply water in a gas state. The composition of the substance does not change, so it is a physical change.
Tim has a mass of 100kgs. Explain how his mass would be affected on Jupiter.
What is, his mass would stay the same because mass does not change based on location?
Gerald has a graduated cylinder with 5mL of water inside. He drops in a rock and the water rises to 9.5mL. Calculate the volume of the rock.
What is 4.5mL?
The mass of a ball is 124 grams. The calculated volume of this ball is 4cm3. Calculate the density.
What is 31 g/cm3?
****DOUBLE POINTS****
Explain why color is a physical property.
List three pieces of EVIDENCE that a chemical change has occurred. (There were 6 that we learned in class!)
1) Bubbles/Gas Formation
2) Temperature Change/Heat Production
3) Color Change (not from mixing!)
4) Production of Light
5) Formation of a new substance
6) Odor Change
Describe why your weight would increase on Jupiter, but decrease on the moon.
What is, Jupiter is larger so it has a stronger gravitational pull. The moon is smaller and has a weaker pull. Weight is based on gravitational force/pull, so weight will change based on location.
Valerie has around 50 ft3 of available space in her room for a desk. She finds one she loves online that is 9ft long, 2ft wide, and 4ft tall. Would this desk be appropriate for her available space?
No. When you calculate the volume of the desk it is 9x4x2, which equals 72ft3 of space needed for the desk. Her available space is 50ft3 so it would not fit.
The measurements of a cube is 3cm long, 2 cm long, and 4 cm tall. The mass of the cube is 720g.
1) Calculate the volume of the cube
2) Calculate the density of the cube.
1) 24cm3
2) 30 g/cm3
Silver has the following properties;
A) Melting point of 1,763 degrees F
B) Non-Flammable
C) Smooth texture
D) Ability to tarnish (similar to rust)
Which are chemical properties? More than one answer may be selected.
What is B,D
You are baking a cake. You mix all of your ingredients into a bowl. You pour your mixture into a dish and place it into the oven to bake at 350 for 25 minutes.
Identify the one physical change and one chemical change in this scenario.
C: Baking the cake (color change, gas production, odor change)
P: Mixing ingredients together. The gravity on the moon is 1/6 of what it is on Earth. If my dog weighs 50lbs, how many pounds would he weigh on the moon?
What is 8.3lbs?
Explain how you would find the volume of an odd/irregularly shaped object, such as a rock.
There is a gemstone that is oddly shaped. You place 10mL of water in a graduated cylinder and drop the gemstone inside. The water rises to 16 mL.
The mass of the object is 11g.
1) Calculate the volume of the gemstone
2) Calculate the density
3) Would this object float or sink in water (Which has a density of 1 g/mL)?
1) 16mL-10mL= 6mL
2) 11g/6mL = 1.8 g/mL
3) This object would sink in water because the object had a density GREATER than 1.
Name one chemical property and one physical property of a metal spoon.

Explain using evidence why burning toast is a chemical change.
This process is not reversible, there is a color change and an odor change.
