A monk near a trading village was well-aware of the signs of a future prophet. He saw the Quraysh caravan being shaded by a cloud while moving, when the sky was completely clear all around. He invited them to a dinner, and he talked to Muhammad, and found out that he had the signs of prophethood, like losing his parents young.

He wanted people to understand that knowledge and guidance comes from education and understanding. By telling people to read, Allah shows that education in religious and worldly matters is extremely important.
