The space between two neurons
What is a synapse?
The two major divisions of the nervous system
What is central and peripheral?
Broca’s Area is located in this lobe of the brain
What is the frontal lobe?
T/F Breathing is a function of the cerebral cortex
What is False?
CT scans collect information about brain functioning
What is False? (Structures - NOT functions)
the electrical signal that moves from the cell body down the axon to the axon terminals when “triggered
What is the action potential?
Part of the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for responses such as pupil dilation, increased heart rate, and increased respiration, i.e., “fight or flight”
What is sympathetic?
Lobe in which one will find the auditory cortex
What is the temporal lobe?
the differences between hemispheres in areas such as those that control language
What is lateralization?
The cerebellum, medulla and pons are all structures within the hindbrain
What is True?
Rule that neurons are either on or off
What is all or none law?
Part of the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for stimulating digestion and causing the bladder to contract
What is parasympathetic?
Lobe that houses the somatosensory area
What is the parietal lobe?
Series of structures in the brain that control a variety of basic functions related to emotions and self-preservation
What is the limbic system?
Smell is routed through the thalamus
What is False? (Odor signals go straight from your nose to the olfactory bulb in the frontal lobe. . . all other senses are transmitted to the cerebral cortex by way of the thalamus)
Term for the insulating material that covers some axons that speeds up nerve impulses
What is the myelin sheath?
Part of the peripheral nervous system that is associated with activities that are thought of as conscious or voluntary.
What is somatic?
Lobe in which one finds the visual cortex
What is the occipital lobe?
The endocrine system consists of a series of glands that produce chemical substances known as this
What are hormones?
People who have their corpus callosum severed for medical reasons would be able to tell you about images shown to only the right visual field
What is TRUE?
Information from the right visual field is processed in the left hemisphere of the brain. Because the brain's language centers (such as Broca's area) are typically located in the left hemisphere, these patients can readily vocalize what they see. However, the reverse is not true. If an image is shown only to the left visual field, the information goes to the non-verbal right hemisphere. Without the corpus callosum acting as a bridge to share that information with the left hemisphere, the patient will not be able to name the object out loud, though they can often identify it by pointing to it with their left hand.
Sequence of three parts of the neuron that reflects the route taken by nerve impulses when one neuron communicates with another
What is 1) dendrite; 2) cell body; 3) axon
Two branches of the autonomic nervous system
What is sympathetic and parasympathetic?
Part of the cortex that sends signals to move our muscles via efferent neurons
What is the motor cortex?
Reabsorption of neurotransmitters by a terminal button
What is reuptake?
A particular electrical signal being transmitted to a neuron is sufficient to generate an action potential. If the magnitude of the incoming electrical signal is doubled, the action potential will double in strength, speed and duration
What is false? (nothing happens to the action potential due to the all or none rule)
