What is domestic violence? 

A pattern of behavior that one person in a relationships uses to control the other. The behavior may be verbal, emotional, physical, financial, or sexual.

What is addiction? 

Addiction is a brain disease that causes people to get try to get drugs at any cost (financial, emotional or physical. A person who has this disease has it for life and even after they haven’t used drugs or alcohol for a long time, they still have to be careful because they always run the risk of starting again. Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Even though most people start out taking drugs because they want to, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person’s ability to stop even when it is clearly bad for the person and those around them. The brain starts needing the drugs and causes the person to do anything to get them.

Difficulty concentrating, low self esteem, anxiety, depression, rapid changes in mood, desire to hurt oneself, difficulty staying still of fidgeting, sleeping routine disturbed, inability or unwillingness to recall trauma details, emotional or physical numbing, recalling physical sensations that occurred during trauma.

Can cause increased ager, confusion about the abuser, fear, anxiety, and changes in behavior (clinging behavior, difficulty going to sleep, or tantrums)

How do children whose parents abuse drugs or alcohol feel?


  • They might feel guilty, like they caused it. Sometimes their parents even tell them this but that is their addiction talking!
  • They might feel mad at the person abusing alcohol or drugs.
  • They might feel like they can’t trust any adults.
  • They might feel confused because they feel anger and love and fear and respect of the same person at the same time.
  • They might feel worried about what will happen next.
  • They might feel really embarrassed.

Why is it important to start in the shallow end and gradually get adjusted to the water (gradual exposure)?

So that the person does not become overwhelmed with the hard feeling, and it allows us to adjust to the trigger safely.

What is avoidance?

When a person actively avoidance reminders of the trigger, or when they intentionally stay busy so they do not have to think about the trigger.

How can domestic violence change family relationships?

Kids may feel responsible for fixing their family, may feel like they can't leave one parent alone, may get in the middle of an abusive event, or call attention to themselves by bad behavior. They may learn that hurtful behavior is somehow part of being close or being loved.

Why do some people become addicted, while others do not?

No single factor can predict whether or not a person will become addicted to drugs. Risk for addiction is influenced by a person’s biology, social environment, and age or stage of development. The more risk factors an individual has, the greater the chance that taking drugs can lead to addiction.
