How is phrase different than a clause? 

An independent clause is a group of words that include a subject and a verb, and it can stand on it's own. It is a complete sentence. 

A dependent clause is a group of words that include a subject and a verb, but it cannot stand on it's own. It would be a fragment.

A phrase is a group of words in a sentence that does not include a subject and a verb.

What type of clauses make up a complex sentence? 

A compound sentence includes two independent clauses joined together with a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS). 

A complex sentence includes one dependent clause  and one independent clause joined with a subordinating conjunction (SWABI). If the dependent clause comes first, it is followed by a comma. However, it does not require a comma if the dependent clause comes second.
