Saturation and Separating Mixtures
100
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is not mixed with any other substance or material, and cannot be separated.
100
What is a mixture?
Mixtures are two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically joined.
100
What happens to particles when they are frozen?
They are tightly packed and vibrate, however they cannot move.
100
Give an example of a homogeneous mixture
Peanut butter, ice cream, milk
100

If you stir a spoonful of sugar into a large glass of water and it dissolves completely, you have created this type of solution that can still hold more solute.

Unsaturated solution

200
What are the two main types of pure substances?
Elements and Compounds
200
What are the two main types of mixtures?
Heterogeneous & Homogeneous
200
What is something that has all identical particles?
Pure Substance

What is the difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixture?

Homogeneous looks the same throughout and you can't take the mixture apart. Heterogeneous can be taken apart and is very easy to tell the parts of the mixture.

This unstable type of solution is made by heating a liquid to dissolve extra solute, then cooling it down carefully so it holds more than it normally should.

What is a supersaturated solution?

300
The periodic table contains what?
Elements
300

What does homogeneous mean?

When a mixture mixes evenly and looks the same throughout.

300

This happens to the speed of particles when you add heat energy to a substance.

What is they speed up / move faster?

300
Give an example of a homogeneous mixture that you cannot physically see, but is all around us.
Air.
300

This separation method involves leaving a muddy mixture alone so that gravity can pull the heavy, dense solid particles down to the bottom of the container.

Settling

400
What is a compound? Give an example to support your answer.
A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements are chemically joined (Example: NaCl aka salt)
400
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A heterogeneous mixture DOES NOT mix evenly, and you can take it apart.
400

This state of matter has a fixed volume but no fixed shape, allowing its particles to slide past one another and take the shape of their container.

  • What is a liquid?

400
What two things do you need to create a homogeneous mixture? Be specific.
Solute and Solvent.
400

This method lets you recover solid salt from salt water by heating the mixture until the liquid turns into vapor, leaving the dry salt behind.

Evaporation

500
Give three examples of an element.
Iron (Fe), Sodium (Na), Hydrogen (H) etc...
500
What happens when I combine a solute and a solvent?
You get a solution.
500

This is what you will find in the spaces between particles in a pure substance.

What is empty space?

500

Give an example of a homogeneous mixture that is not a liquid.

A nail used for wood work.

500

To separate a mixture of salt, water, and sand, you should use this mechanical method to catch the sand first, before evaporating the water to get the salt.

What is filtration?
