Strategies & choices are the methods that writer's are using in their writing (use of metaphors, tone, word choice, etc.), while effect on audience is the connection between those strategies and choices and the audience.

Both were necessary to the journeys of the soldiers. Tangible items usually had deeper meanings to them that got them through the war. For example, Jimmy Cross carries a picture of a girl named Martha to remind him of why he needed to get home.

Message: A nurse going into war felt ready to do her job, but realized that she wasn't as prepared as she had hoped and that it was mentally difficult.

Structure: written in interview form, dialogue

Strategies & Choices: nursing-term heavy, recalling past event, language shift towards last two sentences.

Effect on Audience: because of the addition of nursing terms, the audience knows she is qualified and really did believe she was ready to do this job. Language shift at the end shows a change in the speaker's understanding of the situation.
