What are the steps of the scientific method?
Testable Question, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis, and Conclusion
What is a force? What are the units?
A force is a push or pull of an object. The units are newtons.
What is potential energy?
Potential energy is a type of energy that is stored in an object due to its position relative to other objects
What two measurements do you need to calculate speed?
Distance and Time
What are the two types of weathering?
Physical and Chemical Weathering
What does a controlled experiment require?
It requires variables, control group, and controlled variables.
What are the contact forces?
-Applied force (physical push or pull)
-Friction
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Energy only transforms.
How do you know that speed is constant when you look at a distance time graph?
When the line on the graph is straight
Give an example for each type of weathering (chemical and physical).
Chemical: Oxidation, Carbonation, and Hydrolysis
Physical: Abrasion, Ice Wedging, and Thermal Stress
What do both experiments and investigations collect?
DATA!!
What are the non-contact forces?
-Gravitational
-Magnetic
-Electrical
When is kinetic energy the greatest?
When the object is moving at it's fastest speed
How do you know that the object/person is stopped when you look at a distance time graph?
When the line is horizontal on the graph
How does erosion change landforms on the earth?
Erosion is a destructive process that transports rock and soil particles from one location to another through the actions of wind, water, ice, and gravity.
When should a scientist use a controlled experiment?
When you want to find a clear cause and effect relationship between variables
How do you calculate net force?
If the forces being applied are going opposite directions, you subtract the forces. If the forces being applied are going the same direction, you add the forces together.
How are PE and KE related? Explain with an example.
Potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy and vice versa. An example is when a roller coaster goes down a hill. The potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy.
How do you know that speed is accelerating when you look at a distance time graph?
When the line is curved and is moving upward on the graph
How does deposition change landforms on the earth?
Deposition is a constructive process that builds up new land features through the accumulation of sediment.
When should a scientist use an observation or field study investigation?
When they are studying something in the natural world as it is difficult to control conditions in nature.
What are the two factors that affect gravity? Under what two conditions is gravity strongest?
Mass and Distance affect gravity. The more mass the stronger the gravitational pull is. The less distance between two objects the stronger the gravitational pull is.
How does mechanical energy relate to PE and KE?
Mechanical energy is the sum of PE and KE because energy is never lost or gained.
How do you know that the object/person is returning to where it started when you look at a distance time graph?
When the line is going back to the starting distance
What are three coastal Florida landforms?
Beaches, Sand Dunes, Coral Reefs, Deltas, etc.
