What is a Dependent Variable?

The Dependent Variable is the result (data); what is being measured

100

What is Repetition? What is replication?

Repetition is repeating something to obtain reliable results. Replication is making an exact copy. Making everything the same.

100

What is Qualititative Data?

Qualitative Data is data collected using observations and the five senses.

100
What is an Observation?
An Observation is carefully using the five senses to gain information.
100

What is a Law? What is a Theory? (Both must be answered)

A Law is a rule that must be followed, and a Theory is a hypothesis based on evidence.

200

What is an Independent Variable?

The Independent Variable is the tested variable; what is being changed

200

What is Replication?

In Science, Replication is the act of creating an exact copy of an experiment to obtain the same results.

200

What is Quantitative Data?

Quantitative Data is data collected using measurements, or examining charts and graphs.

200
What is an experiment?
An experiment is using organized procedures to study something under controlled conditions.
200

What is the difference between a Scientific Law and a Societal Law?

A Scientific Law is a law that applies to a certain field of science (physics, thermodynamics, etc.) that has been scientifically proven. A Societal Law is a law that has been agreed upon by a community, which should be followed.

Robbie is planting soybeans in orange juice, fertilized soil, and water to test their growth. What is the Dependent Variable?

The Dependent Variable is the plant's growth, as it is being measured.

300
A Scientist performs 6 Trials during their experiment. Replication or Repetition?
Repetition because the Scientist is going through one testing session, and is only being conducted by one person.
300
Color, Texture, and Scent. Quantitative Data or Qualitative Data?
Qualitative Data because they are found using the five senses, in this case Sight, Touch, and Smell.
300
Maggie identifies a boat. She sees the boat is broken, and can hear it creaking. Is this an observation or an inference?
This is an Observation because she is using the five senses to collect evidence.

Fill in the blank. _____ of General Relativity.

Theory

Emma is testing how the surface that liquid water is on will affect its evaporation. One cup of water is placed on a wooden table, and one cup of water is placed on a metal stool. What is the Independent Variable?

The Independent Variable is the surface the cup is placed on, because it is being changed and tested.

400
A Scientist posts their experiment and results. Other Scientists perform the same experiment to check the results. Repetition or Replication?
Replication, because more than one person is conducting the same experiment and multiple experiments are being performed.
400
Line Graphs, Measurements in Meters, and Charts (Graphic Organizers). Qualitative Data or Quantitative Data?
Quantitative Data because Quantitative Data comes in the form of graphs, measurements, charts, and numbers.
400
Maggie concludes that the boat is very old, because it is creaking and broken. Is this an observation or an inference?
This is an Inference because it uses reasoning, evidence, and past knowledge to form a hypothesis. This is not an Observation because the only evidence given can lead to multiple conclusions (incomplete or poorly built boat).

Fill in the blank. Newton's 3 _____ Motion.

Laws

500

Sam is testing how wind will affect the lifetime of a fire. One fire is being blown on by a fan, while the other fire is burning naturally. What is the Independent and Dependent Variable?

The Independent Variable is the wind, because it is being changed. The Dependent Variable is the fire's burn time, because it is being measured.

500
Why do we use Replication OR Repetition (Only required to answer one)
We use Replication to check for Accuracy (how close you are to your target) and Repetition to check for Precision (how often you can obtain the same results).
500
During the Research Phase of the Scientific Method, would you use Quantitative Data, Qualitative Data, or Both?
You would use Both. Quantitative Data is found in line graphs and measurements during research, while Qualitative Data is the observations you find during research.
500
Can an Observation use Inferences? Can an Inference use Observations? (Both must be answered)
Observations cannot use Inferences because observations are facts collected using the five senses, and don't involve reason. Inferences however, can use Observations because you must use evidence and facts to create an inference.

Daniel has a theory that chips in a vending machine are the first to go out of stock because people enjoy them. Is this a Scientific Theory? Why or Why not?

This is not a Scientific Theory because it cannot be tested or proven. This theory also is not backed by evidence because there could be several other reasons for chips to be out, and for people to be purchasing them.
