What is Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then?
The author develops the character by telling us traits about the character.
What is direct characterization?
Perspective from which a story is told.
What is point of view?
Language not meant to be taken literally, such as metaphors, similes, and hyperboles
What is figurative language?
When two unlike things are compared using "like" or "as".
What is a simile?
The beginning of a story that includes the characters, the setting, and any background information.
What is the exposition?
The leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text.
Who is the protagonist?
An advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future.
What is foreshadowing?
A person, place or object which represents an idea or belief.
What is symbolism?
Conversation between two or more people.
What is dialogue?
The turning point of the story.
What is the climax?
The author shows us the character through STEAL.
What is indirect characterization?
The author evokes certain feelings or emotions in readers through words and descriptions.
What is mood?
The time and place of the action of a literary work. It can include the mood or atmosphere that the author wants to portray.
What is setting?
The central idea or meaning of a literary work; usually a life lesson or "truth" most people would agree on.
What is theme?
The plot events that develop from the inciting incidence to the climax.
What is rising action?
Also a main character, but one who is in opposition to the protagonist.
Who is the antagonist?
Interruptions that writers do to insert past events in order to provide background or context to the current events of a narrative.
What is flashback?
The central idea or point an author is trying to make about a given topic.
What is main idea?
A major category or type of literature.
What is genre?
The struggle between two opposing forces.
What is the conflict?
A character's original qualities shown through how they act, what they say, and what others think about them.
Character Traits
What is expected to happen is the opposite of the outcome.
What is situational irony?
To draw a logical conclusion based on details given in a text and one's own prior knowledge and experience.
What is infer?
A text structure that explains an action and its results.
