Mining is a good idea because it helps us get the resources from deep inside the Earth. (by Ms. Luz) Mining is not a very good idea in certain areas or places. Sometimes the mining companies do not take care of the resources. (Mr. Seyhan)

I know that rocks are made up of minerals and that you can find a lot of interesting information if you study them.
What do you know about rocks?

My favorite type of rock is igneous because they go through a very interesting transformation that involves heat and lava.
What is your favorite type of rock and why?

Earth has about 4,000 kinds of minerals.
How many minerals does Earth have?

Heat and pressure can change older rocks (p.13) Erosion moves rocks and causes them to break (p. 16) Weathering changes the size and shape of rocks (p.15)
How do rocks change?

I remember reading a book about volcanoes. It explained how magma gets formed and how the heat and the pressure turns it into lava. I made this connection when I was reading about igneous rocks. There is a volcano in Colombia. It has not being active in a long time but people are always afraid that it might be active some time.

I would not like to be a miner because I think it is a very hard job. Miners have to live underground under very bad conditions for a long time in order to do their job.

By looking at the table of contents I think we will learn about rocks, types of groups, soil and minerals. Elements of the earth.
Just by looking at the table of contents, what do you think you will learn?

You can use mineral composition, size, shape, color, etc. to compare rocks
What do you use to compare rocks?

Rocks go through a rock cycle. They move up to Earth's surface. They break apart and can get pressed together again.
How are rocks similar?

I can use less plastic bags at home.
What can you do to conserve the natural resources?

I know that minerals are composed of different elements.
What do you know about minerals?

The glossary is for finding new words and the index is for knowing where in the book some of those words are.
What is the glossary and the index for?

A rock is hard, solid and natural. It can have man colors and patterns. The bits and pieces of minerals give a rock its colors and patterns.
How can you describe a rock ?

Change go through a process or cycle. Rocks become metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous in different parts of the earth.
How do rocks change?

Different elements and materials make up the land.
What is the main idea of the book?

I have seen many metamorphic rocks before. Most metamorphic rocks have a smooth and shiny surface with some white or black dots on them.
Have you seen a metamorphic rock? How does it look like?

Minerals are made up of elements that are found on the earth.
What is the main idea of Elements and Minerals?

When we use rocks, minerals, and soil, they are called resources.
What are resources?

People mine, dig, drill or blast the land to get to them. (p. 21, 1st par.) People use machines to get out the important metals. (p.21, 2nd par.)
How do people find minerals?

Colombia is a big producer of minerals. It produces gold, silver and salt.
What are some connections you can make with the world?

I have seen a sedimentary rock before. Most sedimentary rocks have layers, pores and may contain fossils.
Have you seen a sedimentary rock before? How does it look like?
