What is population distribution?

Population Distribution- has to do with the way in which people are spread across an area.

100

What is population density?

Population Density speaks to the number of people living in an area, usually per square kilometer.

100

What is the formula used to calculate population density?

100

What is a census?

an official count orr survey of the population

What is the difference between death rate and birth rate?

Birth rate speaks to the number of babies born per 1000 people in population while death rate speaks to number of deaths per 1000 people in population

List three physical factors that affect population distribution and explain how any one may lead to a high and low population density.

Physical factors (factors influencing the location of human settlements)

Relief

Resources

Climate

200

List three human factors that affect population density and explain how the political factors affects population distribution giving examples

Political- Countries with stable governments tend to have a high population density e.g. Singapore

Unstable countries tend to have lower population densities as people migrate e.g. Afghanistan

Social, economic and political

Differentiate between a choropleth map and a dot map?

Choropleth Map show density or value using colours. For example, such a map could show population density which is the number of people living on a unit area of land. while Dot maps represent the distribution and the concentration of variables such as the number of people, crops, and animals over an area using dots. Each dot represents a specific quantity and is placed in the position where the variable is. The more dots there are in an area the greater the concentration of the item.

Using specific examples how does the relief (how mountainous or flat an area is) of the land in Jamaica or Trinidad affect population distribution?

NB-when speaking on relief speak on both flat and mountainous areas...Give examples of each

In the Caribbean the flat lands are usually found on the coast and results in the development of port facilities for eg. Kingston.  However, Jamaica has a mountainous interior which are sparsely populated such as the Blue, Long and Dallas Mountains and the Cockpit Country. Therefore in Jamaica, example along the coast it is densely populated while the interior is sparsely populated. Population is unevenly distributed throughout Jamaica.

Using specific examples how does the presence of natural resources in Jamaica or Trinidad affect population distribution?

NB-Give specific examples

  • Population density tend to remain relatively high in areas where minerals have been found. Mandeville in Jamaica has developed around bauxite deposits. Towns such as Siparia, Penal and Palo Seco have been built around oil finds in the southern basin in Trinidad.

  • The mining companies offer employment and mobility in jobs and therefore, attract population to their working areas.

  • Regional towns have also been established in such mining areas and have become established as commercial centres which provides additional employment opportunities.

Examples Linstead-St Catherine,  Mandeville-Manchester & May Pen, Clarendon

How does the economic factor affect population distribution in Jamaica or Trinidad

The availability of jobs and economic activities within a country leads to an increase in population density.

Locations with an effective infrastructure, including transport, energy, water, and sanitation are usually densely populated. Kingston, Port of Spain and San Fernando are all densely populated due to the economic opportunities available.

How does political and social factors affect population distribution in Jamaica or Trinidad ?

Effective public services, including education and health care, transport, attract people leading to a higher population density  for example the urban/city areas of Kingston, St. Catherine, Clarendon. San Fernando in Trinidad has 44 schools within the county. High levels of crime discourage people from settling in an area, leading to a low population density. Governmental corruption can also lead to a low population density.
