I was born in the city of Porbandar, India, on October 2, 1869.

my father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the dewan (chief minister) of Porbandar, a government official under British rule. Gandhi’s mother, Putlibai, was deeply devoted to the Vaishnavist tradition of Hinduism.
