What is inertia? Say what it is and then give one example of it.
Inertia = the laziness principle. It says that objects want to keep doing what they are doing--objects at rest will remain at rest, and objects in motion will remain in motion, until an unbalanced force changes what they are doing.
100
What weighs more: 12 grams of helium gas, or 12 grams of sand from the beach?
They both weigh the same! 12 grams.
100
What does density describe about an object?
How much matter there is in a certain volume of space.
100
Is this an Observation or an Inference: "The desk has probably been used for more than 3 years... it looks worn down"
Inference
100
What is Kinetic Energy
Energy of Movement
200
What is Newton's second law? Give the formula AND an example of how we can use it in the real world.
F = ma (My example was more people sitting on the table = more force is required to move the table because it has more mass).
200
Is this mass or volume?: The amount of matter or atoms inside something.
Mass
200
Which is more dense, oil or water? And how do you know?
Water, because when you mix oil and water, the water sinks to the bottom and the oil stays on top.
200
Is this an observation or an inference? - The sky is blue today.
Observation
200
What is Potential Energy?
Energy of an object based on its position.
300
What is Newton's 3rd law? Say what it is and then one real-world application of it.
Every force has an equal and opposite force. (As a rocket goes up, the exhaust (smoke) stream goes down with equal force) or (fist punches wall, wall pushes back against fist with equal and opposite force).
300
What are TWO units that you can use to measure volume?
Meters cubed, centimeters cubed, milliliters
300
How is Mass different from Weight?
Mass is the amount of STUFF in something. Weight is the force of gravity pulling the mass down onto a scale.
300
Say 4 things that all students should do every day that they enter room 307.
Enter quietly/without talking Check mailbox Get binder Start catalyst
300
Look at the drawing on the board. At what letter does the ball have the MOST kinetic energy?
Just before landing (D).
400
How much force is required to accelerate a 200 kg person at 21 m/s/s?
4200 N (200 * 21)
400
Does this statement have to do with mass or volume? - How big something is.
Volume, because volume is how much space an object takes up.
400
As we saw yesterday, Diet Coke floats while Regular Soda sinks. Why does this happen, even though they are both the same volume (355 mL)?
Diet Coke uses Nutrasweet, a fake sugar, which only requires a very small amount to be dissolved in the liquid in order to make it taste sweet. Regular pop has a LOT of sugar in it. Therefore, regular pop is more dense than diet pop.
400
How long do you have to make up missed quiz points? How do you do it? What will your grade be raised to?
One week from when you get the quizzes passed back. You need to first figure out all the correct answers, then you need to make sure you can clearly explain or teach someone how to do them. Then you talk to Mr. Urkov after class and tell him you are coming in to talk to him after school. If you can teach him all the answers you got wrong, your grade will be raised to an 80%.
400
A tennis ball weighs 0.02kg and is traveling at 12 m/s. What is its kinetic energy?
1.44 joules. (12*12 = 144, 144*0.02 = 2.88, 2.88/2 = 1.44)
500
Head rests in cars are useful to protect our necks from whiplash in case someone rear-ends us. Why is this necessary, according to Newton's First Law of Motion?
Because if you are rear-ended, your head will want to stay still (because it has inertia), but your body will be moved forward by your car's seat. Without the head rest, your head would just jerk backwards and snap.
500
How is mass different from weight?
Mass is how much STUFF (matter) is in something. Weight is the force of gravity pulling it down towards Earth.
500
A volcanic rock called 'basalt' floats when it is put in water. What does that mean about basalt's density compared to water's density?
Basalt is less dense than water. If it were more dense, it would sink.
500
What are the three big goal areas of this class?
1) Getting 80% mastery on all objectives. 2) Writing a college-level lab report. 3) Improving ACT science section score by at least 3 points.
