What is a thesis statement?
It is the essay topic plus the opinion/position.
What is dialogue?
Spoken words between characters in an essay.
What are the four types of sentences?
Simple, Compound, Complex, Compound-Complex.
What is a comma splice?
When you join two independent clauses with a comma and no conjunction, it's called a comma splice.
Ex. Koala bears are not actually bears, they are marsupials.
What are the three main essay formats?
MLA: For English, Literature, and Speech.
APA: For Science and Math.
Chicago: For History and Arts.
What is revising and editing?
Revising: Rewriting the plot or main ideas of an essay.
Editing: Fixing the grammar, spelling, and formatting of an essay.
What is the difference between Compound and Complex Sentences?
Compound Sentences have two independent clauses that are connected together with a coordinating conjunction.
Complex Sentences have one independent and one dependent clause that is connected together by a subordinating conjunction.
What is a Sentence Fragment?
An incomplete sentence that lacks either a subject or a verb.
Ex. Clothes and shoes scattered around the room.
Ex. Discovered the cure for the disease.
What are all 5 steps of the writing process in order?
Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing.
What are the types of prewriting?
Brainstorming, mapping, listing, freewriting, and questioning.
What is the format of an essay and each paragraph?
Introduction: Hook, Thesis, Main Ideas
Body Paragraphs: Topic sentences, Reasoning, Examples, Explanation, and Transitions.
Conclusion: Thesis, Main Ideas, and Reflection/Prediction.
