Tell us one fact about The Arnolfini Portrait and one about The Starry Night

 The Arnolfini Portrait

  • Artist: Painted by Flemish artist Jan van Eyck in 1434.
  • Medium: Oil on oak panel.
  • Subject: Depicts Giovanni di Nicolao di Arnolfini, an Italian merchant, and his wife, Costanza Trenta.
  • Symbolism: The roundels circulating the mirror frame are scenes from the Passion of Christ. All of the scenes that show Christ alive are on the left side of the mirror (near Giovanni), whereas all of the scenes alluding to Christ’s death or resurrection are closest to Costanza. Additionally, the lit candle is placed near Giovanni, whereas the snuffed-out candle is placed over Costanza. The convex mirror, one of the most intriguing elements of the painting, reflects not only the entire room and the back of the couple but also the image of two men entering the room through a door—one dressed in red, the other in blue. Above it, the artist’s signature in elaborate writing states: “Johannes de Eyck fuit hic. 1434” (meaning “Jan van Eyck was here. 1434”). This signature may assert Van Eyck’s presence in the scene he painted.
The dog, which appears to be a Griffon terrier or perhaps an Affenpinscher, stands closest to the female figure, representing her death and symbolizing her being accompanied into the afterlife, much like angels in religious imagery.

The Starry Night

  • Artist: Painted by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in June 1889.
  • Medium: Oil on canvas.
  • Inspiration: Depicts the view from the east-facing window of Van Gogh's asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with an imaginary village added.
  • Location: Has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941, acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest.

The Gift of the Magi
How do the main characters in The Christmas Presents demonstrate the theme of self-sacrifice, and what does this reveal about their personalities?

Della runs to a hair shop and sells her hair for twenty dollars. Then she uses the money to buy Jim a simple platinum watch chain. Della returns home to fix her hair into curls and make dinner. When Jim walks into the door, he freezes, staring at Della's hair. Della tells him that she did it in order to buy a proper Christmas present for him. Jim snaps out of his shock, hugs Della, and throws a package on the table. He explains that no haircut could make him love her any less, but that he was surprised because of the present that he bought for her. Della opens the package to find expensive tortoiseshell combs for her long hair. She's ecstatic for a moment before she begins crying, and Jim has to comfort her. Suddenly, Della remembers her present to Jim, and asks to see Jim's watch so that she could put the new chain on it. Jim sits back on the couch and smiles, then admits that he sold his watch in order to buy the combs.
