While he was hunting, a hawk placed a tiny fish in his hand. To Ma’mun’s surprise, the little fish was still alive! Then, he went back to the city and passed the same street where the Imam had been. Imam Muhammad at-Taqi (a) was still there. So, Ma’mun hid the fish in his hands, went up to the Imam and asked him, ‘Can you tell me what is in my hands?’ Allah let the Imam know what was in Ma’mun’s hands. Then, Imam Muhammad at-Taqi (a) said ‘Allah has created tiny fish in the river. Sometimes, the hawks of kings catch these little fish, and these rulers use the little fish to test and question the progeny of Rasulullah (s)!’ Ma’mun was shocked because that is exactly what he was doing and he was the caliph and ruler! When he heard this, he said ‘You are definitely the son of Imam Ali ar-Ridha (a).
