What is the reason for a health and safety check?
Health and safety checks help to keep residents accountable for their space. We want to make sure that they are living in a clean space.
If we do not take care of our residence halls, then we are not being good stewards of the spaces that we are given.
This is an opportunity to have personal connections with your residents. If the resident is in the room, try to have a conversation with them and get to know them a little better. If you go into their rooms every 2 weeks and just check it off and leave, you won’t be able to make a connection with them and they may even be more likely to complain if you fail them.

Describe servant leadership
Mark 10:43 says, “But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. For even the son of man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life–a ransom for many.”
Jesus completely redefined leadership throughout his ministry. He was often noticing people around him and meeting their deepest needs through salvation and healing. Sure he taught in large and small groups but he spent a large portion of his ministry serving.
What do you do when a resident has a complaint about their health and safety check?
Check whether room failed or passed
Put a checkmark next to the failed items.
Write room number next to fails.
If you get a failed room check, text your ARD by the end of the day.
If everyone passes, just send a text to your ARD that everyone passed.
Add a note of what failed at the bottom of the sticky note.
Take a picture of the failed item next to the sticky note so that there is evidence of the failed item.
Be sure to take good pictures of the failed items (not blurry) so that we can see it clearly.
Residents have the right to appeal a failed room check. Info will be a failed email from us.
What policy refers to confidentiality regarding parent interactions with students. Say a parent is at the door wanting to know where a student is living...what should you say?

What is the difference in protocol between when you find alcohol or when you find drugs in a resident room?
Alcohol - Don’t touch it- call the RD, and make sure people don’t leave. If necessary, de-escalate by turning on lights and turning off music. Take photos and fill out an incident report as accurately as possible. RD will remove alcohol when we arrive. If someone appears intoxicated, safety is always the priority. Call 911 if you suspect alcohol poisoning, lay them on their side and get them to drink water.
Drugs - Don’t touch anything- call the RD, make note of everything that happened (take pictures, make sure no one leaves the room). Let them know the RD is on the way. Don’t let them leave the room. If you suspect a medical emergency, call 911.

Explain the ideal room in a passing health and safety check
Floor: Nothing on the ground (clothes).
Clothes: Clean clothes folded on the bed is acceptable.
Dirty clothes should be in a hamper not overflowing.
Trash: needs to be reasonably empty. (Above a quarter of the way full, take out)
Smell: Ensure that the room does not smell bad. (Febreeze goes a long way).
Sink: no sitting water, grime, smudges. Make sure that they have used spray.
Mirror: no smudges, streaks. Use glass cleaner.
Safety concerns: make sure that outlets are not overplugged. Nothing hanging from sprinklers. Any other obvious safety concerns. No candles or lighters allowed. No toasters or open-coiled appliances allowed. No vapes or nicotine products. Make sure policies are being followed.
Toilet: bowl is clean, wipe off seat.
Shower: shower doors will collect mold and grime. Make sure to wipe down with a bleach bathroom cleaner. Should not have any pink on the doors either because pink is biogrowth as well.
