I understand your concerns, but you are never too old! As women get older, their chances of getting breast cancer increases, because the older you are the longer you have had your breasts. Most breast cancer occurs in women over the age of 40 and about half the women with breast cancer are 65 and older.

Patient's doctor requires their patients to have an order for their mammogram. We have to let the patient know she needs to obtain it before coming to the exam or it may be cancelled.

Annual mammograms allow Radiologists to closely watch for any small changes to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage when its most treatable. Annual mammograms result in a nearly 40% mortality reduction, compared to 23% for biennial (every 2 years) screening.
Patient has JAI for her insurance, what would you do?
Let her know JAI does require an order but if she would like, we can obtain it on her behalf. We just need to schedule her at least 7 business days out and place it on the Special Accommodations sheet for it to be obtained.

• No Multivitamins or Calcium Supplements on the day of your exam.
• No Tums within 24 hours.
• No Barium studies to be done within 5 days of the exam.
• Elastic-waist pants are recommended.
• No metals or wires in clothing.

Patient states she doesn't have a family history of breast cancer and doesn't think she needs a mammogram. What would you say to her?
It is true that if other women in your family have had breast cancer, you may have a greater chance of getting it too. This is one reason why it is so important for you to have a mammogram every year. A mammogram can find breast cancer often up to 2 years before it can be felt. Only 5%-15% of breast cancers are from family history, that number is in your favor.
The patient states she has an x-ray order, should I schedule it?
No, all X-rays are on a walk-in basis. Please ask the patient to bring her order to her mammogran appointment and she can have it either before or after her mammogram exam.

Patient states she has a port placed in her chest and is wondering about having a mammogram with it in there. What would you tell her?
It is not a problem at all to have a mammogram with breast implants. Our mammographers are trained to take special care not to cause any additional discomfort. We never put pressure upon the implant during the exam. You can definitely still have a mammogram with a pacemaker/port/medical device. Our technologists will be extra careful with you. Just be sure to make them aware before your exam.
