A neuron receives signals from many other neurons at the same time. Explain how the neuron decides whether to fire an action potential by describing the roles of excitatory signals, inhibitory signals, and threshold at the axon hillock.
A neuron fires an action potential only if the signals it receives push it past a certain level called the threshold. Excitatory signals make the inside of the neuron more positive, bringing it closer to threshold. Inhibitory signals make it more negative, pushing it farther from threshold. At the axon hillock, the neuron adds up all the excitatory and inhibitory inputs happening at that moment. If the total is strong enough to reach threshold, the neuron fires. If not, it stays quiet.
Congrats, you're now a high school neurologist! ๐ฅน๐ฅน๐ฅน
