Engine Basics
This engine is able to produce power after one complete cycle. A complete cycle is the motion of intake and a second motion of exhaust.
What is a 2 stroke or 2 cycle engine?
This system keeps the vehicle from overheating.
What is the cooling system? (radiator)
The name of the business that we visited for our small engine fieldtrip.
What is Heckman Outdoor Power?
This set of brakes does a majority of the braking on a vehicle.
What are the front brakes?
Another name for the smaller spare tires. (Think breakfast food/treat that you probably rarely get to have. 😉 )
What is a doughnut?
♥️🥯♥️🍩♥️
This bakes clay at high temperatures.
What is a kiln?
This engine has combustion without a spark plug.
What is the diesel engine?
If your brake pedal fails you can use this as a back up to stop your vehicle.
What is the parking brake?
This is an example of a tool or item that uses a two-stroke engine.
What are scooters, dirt bikes, jet skies, smaller outboard motors, weed trimmer (whip or whacker), hedge trimmer, edger, chainsaws, some snow blowers and garden tillers?
Name one of the many items or methods used to clean off a corroded battery terminal mentioned in class.
What is sandpaper, file, pocket knife, wire brush, vinegar, soda pop, windex, baking soda paste, apply with an old tooth brush, cleaning tool as seen in the video, once clean, spray with WD40, to protect?
The maximum speed AND distance you should travel on a small spare, according to the video we watched.
What is 50 mph and no more than 100 miles?
The three primary colors.
What are red, yellow, & blue?
This ignites the compressed air/fuel mixture.
What is a spark plug?
This recharges the battery by changing energy in motion into electrical energy.
What is the alternator?
The reason a snowblower does not have an air filter.
What is the excess moisture would cause the filter to freeze up?
These should be changed when worn thin or start to squeak to prevent having to also change out a more expensive part sometimes called the discs.
What are the brake pads?
The pattern suggested to use when tightening the lugnuts.
What is a star pattern?
⭐️
The term for scratching hatch marks on the clay as part of joining two pieces together.
What is to score or scoring?
This stroke on a 4-stroke engine happens AFTER the spark plug ignites the air fuel mixture.
What is the power stroke?
This should be checked regularly to keep your engine running well. It may be found in crazy places like a glove box.
What is the air filter(s)?
In the spring, before its first use of the year, this task should be completed on a lawn mower that has sat idle all winter.
What is change the oil?
In the video we watched, the dad mentioned a specific order to attach the jumper cables when jumpstarting a car with a dead battery. This is the correct cable color and car combination to attach first.
What is the RED (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal of the DEAD battery.
Name two of the three essential tools needed to change a flat tire.
What are jack, spare tire & wrench?
The color used in advertising logos to project trustworthiness or stability.
What is blue?
On a 2 stroke engine these two key operations happen on a single intake stroke (vs two separate strokes on the 4 stroke).
What is fuel enters and is compressed?
A small part of this system is needed, mostly, to lower sound and toxic pollutants.
What is the exhaust system? (muffler)
A special floater intake mechanism in a two-cycle engine allows chainsaws to work in this way, which would not be possible with a 4-cycle engine.
What is upside down or sideways? (Not always in a flat position.)
Name two of these three parts that Professor Brandon taught about while he was changing his brakes.
What are lugnuts, brake pad or rotor (or brake disc)?
Name two of the several safety measures that were mentioned to consider while changing a flat tire
What is having the right tools, being on a flat surface, putting blocks under the vehicle once it's raised, move away from the busy traffic, engage the parking break, turn on your emergency flashing hazard lights, call in a professional if needed.
Two of the different cultures discussed in class that used pottery.
What are the Egyptian, Chinese, Greek, or Mexican?
