What is the denotation of a word?
The actual dictionary definition of a word.
What is the connotation of the word LAZY?
Define the word topic and how long it is.
The main point of the passage, usually 1-2 words.
Explain the importance of using elaboration techniques? What is the job of an elaboration technique?
Elaboration techniques are important to make writing more clear, to give examples and provide a visual. The job is to stretch simple ideas into more clear, precise ideas.
Explain what cause and effect is.
The author shows how an action or event causes an effect.
What is figurative language/words?
Words and phrases that have a meaning different from literal meaning. Provides a visual for the reader.
What text structure is used in the following passage?
Students at Old Vail Middle School were frustrated because they spent nearly 20 minutes waiting in the lunch line every day. By the time they got their food, they only had 10 minutes left to eat before the bell rang. Many students complained that they didn't have enough time to finish their meals or talk with friends. To solve this problem, the school added a second lunch line in the cafeteria. Now students can choose between two serving stations, which cuts the wait time in half. Students now have plenty of time to eat and socialize during lunch.

An example is a way of proving or making something more clear. A definition is providing the exact meaning of a word, phrase or idea.

Information in time order. A timeline, or date order information in a passage. It can be minutes, hours, days, weeks, years, or even centuries.
What is the connotative meaning of a word.
Words written with a positive, negative or neutral feeling. The word creates a feeling.

What is a topic sentence? Where will the topic sentence usually be located?
A sentence in the passage that states the central idea usually found near the beginning and/or the end of the passage.

What is a scenario?
An anecdote is a very short true story, usually about yourself. While a scenario is a very short story that is not true or made up.
Explain what sequence order is.
Information in step by step order. Examples include, cooking, playing a game, putting something together or following directions.
What are technical words?
Words written about a specific subject or topic and are specific to that subject or topic.
Explain the job of text structures.
What are supporting details in a passage?
More specific ideas, examples or evidence that support the central idea.

What is a quotation?
A statistic is data, percents, fractions or other numbers (not dates) in a passage. A quotation is a direct quote in quotation marks.
Explain pro and con.
The author shows the positive (pro) and the negative (con) side of one or more topics.
What type of word is microscope?
Technical, meaning a device to magnify very tiny things and used in science and medical fields.

The first submarines were developed in the 17th century. However, submarines were not widely used in military battles until World War I.

When Youtube was founded in 2005, it quickly revolutionized the way we access entertainment. No longer were people dependent on television. Youtube sensations were shared by word of mouth and many celebrities have become more popular from Youtube.
