I grew up in the big city, which is always loud and busy. It was impossible to make friends there because everyone was rude. Sometimes that made me mad. Then, one day my mother told me and my sister that my grandmother was very sick, and she said we we’re moving out to the country to help her out. The country was way different than the city. You could see the stars at night, and there wasn’t another house for miles. The crickets sang a tune at night that was one of the most pleasant noises I’d heard in my entire life.

A Lion asleep in his lair was waked up by a Mouse running over his face. Losing his temper, he seized it with his paw and was about to kill it. The Mouse, terrified, entreated him to spare its life. "Please let me go," it cried, "and one day I will repay you for your kindness." The idea of so insignificant a creature ever being able to do anything for him amused the Lion so much that he laughed aloud, and good-humouredly let it go. But the Mouse's chance came, after all. One day the Lion got entangled in a net which had been spread for game by some hunters, and the Mouse heard and recognized his roars of anger and ran to the spot. Without more ado it set to work to gnaw the ropes with its teeth, and succeeded before long in setting the Lion free. "There!" said the Mouse, "you laughed at me when I promised I would repay you: but now you see, even a Mouse can help a Lion."

Adam stared into the trunk of his father’s car, and his shoulders dropped. “I have to carry these?” He looked at the tent poles and tarps in the back of the car with dread. “I’ve never set up the tent before, Dad.” “It’s a rite of passage,” said his father, who was taking some fishing poles from the backseat. “You’re old enough to set that up now.” “I’m barely eleven,” grumbled Adam, as he struggled with the tent bag. There are several ways to recycle around your house. If your city has neighborhood pickup, you can simply leave recyclable materials outside in a marked recycling bin. The items are collected and taken to a nearby recycling center. Another option is to take recyclable items to a refund station, but these exist only in certain states. For example, you can take many types of cans to can-return machines at grocery stores and supermarkets. Individuals insert used cans and receive a small amount of money for each one. It is easy to separate recyclable items from trash. Paper, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans can usually be recycled. To make it easy, keep separate recycling bins in various places in your home.

The skin on its belly was so clear that the scientists could see its organs! Because it had transparent skin, the scientists knew it was a type of glass frog. Bleaching happens when corals are exposed to water temperatures that are warmer than usual. Warmer water puts stress on corals. In response, they expel tiny plantlike organisms, called algae, that normally live inside their tissues and give them their color. Corals and algae’s relationship is an example of mutualism, when two organisms living together benefit from one another. The corals protect the algae, and the algae make food for the corals. Corals also capture prey, but it’s estimated that algae provide corals with up to 90 percent of their energy.

Can you imagine not having a chance to play tag or climb on the monkey bars during recess?  For many students across the country, their recess break is quickly becoming disappearing. Nearly 40 percent of elementary schools have either eliminated or are considering eliminating recess, according to the American Association for the Child’s Right to Play. Some school officials say they want students to have more classroom time to learn. They hope that more time in class will help students perform better on standardized tests. In addition, many schools are cutting recess because they can no longer afford to offer it. Those schools don’t have the money to hire lunch aides or to buy sports equipment for the playground.

Open ended response: Why do some schools want to reduce or eliminate recess?  Provide supporting details from the passage above.
