These last few days I have found myself alone with no-one for company save for the Beatles, and half of them are dead. Not Paul though, he’s still alive despite what conspiracy theorists and Beatles nuts would have you believe*. And it’s a good thing too as the “great prophet” John Lennon is significantly below par on this recording and his only indisputably decent contribution to proceedings is the opener “Come Together” which is ironic in its title because, by this point, the Beatles had practically fallen apart.

But the real thing is, well. People have talked endlessly, and much more intelligently than I can, about how revolutionary Brian's approach to making this album was--of basically constructing it based on individual sounds--but what are those sounds? Well, on this album year a lot of bells and chimes. Recorders, sometimes. In one memorable instance, a bicycle horn. Homey, domestic, sometimes childlike sounds, in other words... and the genius here, more than anything, is that Brian... well despite everything this really feels like an individual achievement by Brian, the Brian who famously was In His Room, and Brian managed to let us in, to actually convey the kind of inner comfort that comes from solitude in the face of a teeming, vicious world. None of us were made for these times.

It's hard to know where to start with (ALBUM NAME). It's borderline incomprehensible, and yet. I think about what went into making this album and my brain just shuts down. Albums like this usually collapse before we get to hear them. This is vast, giant, and almost unconquerable. The sound of a man managing to capture the exact moment his brain explodes in some kind of egomaniacal supernova and putting the results on display. Listening to this record makes it easier to understand why Kanye thinks that being completely mental is his superpower.
