Southerns were banned from slavery, but didn't want to give african americans rights. They were laws that limited african americans rights and were meant to keep them from gaining political or economic power. A.A. couldn't vote, own guns, or serve on juries. They could legally marry and own property. In some states they could only be servants or farm labors. Some made them have yearly contracts to work.

Literacy Test- It was a method that you had to read and explain part of the Constitution before you could register to vote. Poll Tax- You had to pay a small tax each year. Grandfather Clause- if a mans grandfather had voted before 1867 them he could vote without a literacy test.

The election of 1876 ended Reconstruction. Hayes was the Republican candidate Hayes promised to get soldiers out of the south so he won the election and became the19th president.
