The Spirit of the Lord departed from him. Saul had rejected God’s word, so the Lord rejected him as king.

What is the gospel, and how does tonight’s lesson connect with Jesus?
God saves sinners.
He washed His disciples’ feet, died on the cross for our sin, and rose again. David knew he would be king one day but still served Saul. We want the spotlight; Jesus took the towel and the cross. When we trust Him, He gives us a new heart that can serve instead of always needing to be first.

God cares about the condition of our hearts / God looks at the heart, not just the outside
David was already anointed as the next king. What did he still do, and why was that humble?
He left the sheep and went to serve Saul, the king he would one day replace. He was willing to serve instead of grabbing the spotlight.
Why is it so hard to put others before ourselves?
It goes against our sin nature. We are most worried about ourselves.
