Dream Themes

Although every dream is unique, people of different ages in different cultures tend to dream about similar themes or topics. Researchers think that certain themes are common in dreams because they are based on experiences that most people around the world have. What are some themes that people dream about frequently, and what do they mean?

You're sitting in a classroom when the teacher says, "Let's start the test." You didn't know there was going to be a test, and you haven't studied for it. You scan the test questions and realize you can't answer any of them. Does this dream sound familiar? You don't have to be a student to have it. You can have it at any time in your life when you're facing a challenge, such as a new job. The dream shows that you're scared because you think you're not prepared for the challenge and you might fail.

You're standing on the roof of a tall building. You walk to the edge and look down. Suddenly, you fall off the building. Your heart is beating fast and you're extremely scared. Just before you hit the ground, you manage to escape the danger by waking up. Experts believe this kind of upsetting dream can express the feeling that you need help and support to deal with problems in your life.

You're on the roof of a tall building, but you don't fall. Instead, you jump off and start to fly. If you are anxious during this dream, it may mean that you want to escape a situation in your real life. Alternatively, if you are happy, flying in your dream may express feelings of freedom. As you fly, you feel confident and creative. You are exploring positive new experiences, and you are excited about them.

You're walking around in a building you know well. Suddenly, you see a door you've never seen before. You are surprised. You open the door to discover a room you've never visited. Like the flying dream, this dream shows that you feel positive about new possibilities in your life. It can be about realizing that you as a person are growing and changing—learning new skills or taking on new responsibilities. In other words, you are successfully achieving things that you never thought you could achieve.

Have you had any of these dreams or dreams like them? If so, not only do you share common experiences with many other people around the world, but you are processing these experiences in similar ways.
