A movement starting in the 1500’s in Western Europe which sought to reform the Catholic Church and resulted in the establishment of Protestant Churches
What is the Reformation?
This meeting was held between 1545 and 1563 by the Catholic Church in an effort to fix the Catholic Church and end corruption

People who disagreed with the Catholic Church.
Who are Protestants?
A belief that the fate of every person's soul was decided by God long ago.
What is Predestination?
This town is home to the cathedral where Martin Luther preached and eventually wrote and "published" his Ninety-Five Theses.
What is Wittenberg?
This German priest and teacher was famous for nailing his 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, starting the Protestant Reformation
Who is Martin Luther?
This sister of King Francis I of France was a protector of Protestants. She was well educated and connected, could speak six languages, and was a widely read poet.
Who is Marguerite of Navarre?
A Spanish soldier who founded the Jesuits - a group who actively spread the message of the Catholic Church during the Reformation.
Who is Ignatius Loyola?
An official order from the Pope with his lead seal, called a bulla, attached.
What is a Bull?
The Holy Roman Emperor who ruled during the Reformation and oversaw Martin Luther's trial at the city of Worms.
Who was Charles V?
This was the main church in Western Europe before the Reformation. It's name comes from a Greek word meaning "Universal"

An "insurance policy" on someone's souls. It was a cancellation of punishment for sins.

A powerful organization, based in Spain, which captured, tortured, and killed those who they saw as heretics.

Ideas, information, or rumours deliberately spread by an organization or movement.
What is Propaganda?
This early reformer studied at the University of Paris and made a living writing humorous books. He was critical of the Church, but made sure not to say anything that would make him a heretic
Who is Erasmus?
Someone who openly criticized the Church's teachings
What is a Heretic?
When someone gives a job to a relative even if the person given the job is unqualified or undeserving.
What is Nepotism
This Protestant figure founded a church which forbade singing "indecent" songs, playing cards, gambling, and dancing.
Who is John Calvin?
A formal banishment from the Church.
What is Excommunication?
The place in which a person's soul was thought to suffer until all their sins had been punished.
What is Purgatory?
The style in which great works of art and architecture were designed to emphasize the glory and god deeds of the Church.
What is Baroque?
When someone is paid for work that they did not do. This practice created much resentment.
What is Simony?
This list of concerns with the Catholic Church, written by Martin Luther, was nailed to the door of the Cathedral in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517.
What are the Ninety-Five Theses?
The meeting and trial Martin Luther where the Church accused Luther of heresy. This meeting was held in the city of Worms.
