What are 3 tricks to staying safe when hiking in bear county?
1) Avoid hiking alone
2) Make a lot of noise, clapping, singing, or talking loudly when on the trail: especially when in thick brush and near water.
3) Avoid bear food. If you smell something dead, see birds circling overhead, or a berry rich area avoid those. It may take some adventure away from the hike but can lower the possibility of running into a bear.
4) Hike during day light
5) Check for recently bear closures or activity in the area.
6) Watch for bear signs: scat, tracks, marking on trees and flipped over rocks are all good signs of recent activity.
