When both brothers offered sacrifices to God, God favored Abel's offering (likely because it was the best of his flock) over Cain's offering of field produce, causing Cain to become jealous and enraged. Driven by anger, Cain killed his brother Abel, leading to God cursing Cain and forcing him to wander the earth as a fugitive
