Banks issued Bills of Exchange that would be used in place of actual gold. This would be safer than carrying around gold, since there was a large presence of bandits and pirates along trade routes such as the Silk Road.

Banks also provided insurance opportunities. This allowed merchants' goods to be replaced by the bank if they were robbed while on the Silk Road
