How many coping skills is a student on HS/HRs allowed to have? Give 3 examples
1 safe skill at a time! If you come across more than one, you need to remove it!
- Squishy ball
- 1 crayon
- book (no staples)
- loose leaf paper
- DVD player with STAFF HOLDING
What needs to be done for a student to be put on the "ready list"
- Meds (FIRST)
- Clean room
- Routines completed (changed, brush teeth)
- COMPLETELY dressed (shoes, backpack, coat ready to go)
What are the chores that get done on 1st shift? Where would you find this if you weren't sure?
PHYSICAL PLANT CHECKLIST-
- space rooms
- all trashes - res and sh
- clean off sup station
- Hallways clear
Line up your team the way you would before saying your class is ready to transition. How do you know they're ready? When should the door be opened?
Quiet - STRAIGHT line. No headphones, no hoods. Door is open when there's a quiet room.
What is safety and why is it important?
Ashlyn/Taylor decided if answer is sufficient.
Transition someone from your group across the rec room as if you were transitioning a HS/HR student to school across the driveway.
Ashlyn/Taylor decide
TRUE OR FALSE: It is okay for students to transition with headphones in if they are off?
FALSE - we can never be totally sure they're off and if we keep the expectation consistent across the board, it creates a more safe environment.
Why do we complete chores on each shift?
soooo many people here all day long! It's important to keep our environment clean and SAFE for the kids and everyone coming to work.
What does a clean room look like?
- Clothes folded in hamper and dresser
- Bed made neatly
- No trash/food in room
- Floor swept
- Shoes and things on floor lined up
- Cubbies cleared out
- Inside armoire organized
- Top of dresser organized
List 5 things a student cannot have in their room EVER.
What should you do if you find something from this list?
- hygiene
- contraband
- food
- nail polish
- makeup (except for bridge)
- mirrors
-razors
-perfume
- mouth wash
- q-tips
- scissors
- sewing needles
What should you be listening for when a student is in the bathroom on HS and WHY?
Pick someone on your team and demonstrate how to redirect a student out of their doorway. Work together to explain why it's important students aren't in their doorway!
When in their doorways it can create an unsafe environment and provide opportunities for students to yell to each other, gossip or get involved in something they shouldn't.
How many trashes are in the school house that need to be emptied each shift?
6!
- conference room
- sup station
- group room
- copy room
- staff bathroom
- library
Why is no swearing a rule?
It doesn't contribute to an overall safe and supportive environment that is trauma informed.
Give three reasons students cannot lend and borrow
- Grooming Behavior
- Things could get broken
- Things could get lost
Can students on LS/LR do meal prep?
NO! There is an open flame in the kitchen and they cannot be near this on a safety status, as well as increased access to unsafe items.
It's important we are redirecting and guiding our kids to have appropriate topics of conversation - no talking about others who are not present or topics like drugs, alcohol etc. as it's not conducive to their treatment.
Technically yes, (in the big sink) however, please dont! It clogs easily and causes lots of stress for everyone. . and then we are down a sink. The sink near the fryer should NEVER have food put in it as it does not have a disposal :)
Taylor is having a phone call with her mom. Help her with it.
Taylor's turn.
Why do we fill out the location sheet?
To ensure students have EYES on them every 15 min per policies. Additionally, it helps us not lose students and maintain a safe milieu. If you are giving locations of students, you should actually have eyes on them and not just say where you thought they were last time you saw them.
Stella is on a HS/HR and has had a really awesome day in school! Is it okay for her to join a rec room activity on 2nd shift? Why or Why not?
No way jose! She is at increased risk to run or harm herself on these precautions and transitions between buildings should be limited to school transitions ONLY to provide safety and containment to Stella. Additionally, there are 3 doors in the rec room which make it a less containing option.
On occasion, there may be admin approval given for this to happen, but it would be supported with a strong plan to support a safe transition and a safe experience in the rec room.
Sacoya's crop top meets the top of her jeans when she is standing still. When she starts to walk to class, you can see her whole back and belly. What do you do?
*can the rest of your team list off other clothing expectations? If so, you get 100 extra points
Redirect her to put something else on or over it. If she declines, she should remain out of the community until she's able to make the right decision.
Who's responsibility is it to clean up common areas?
Yours. . . and everyone else in this room and that works here! This is our kids home for the time being and a place where we all come to work. If we see trash, or a mess, or things laying around, everyone walking by should be working to pick it up and leave the area looking clean and tidy to support the treatment of our kids as well as a nice work environment.
Why do our kids have to ask before moving?
Creates a contained safe environment. If they're walking around everywhere, it's harder to monitor and just feels more chaotic.
When are you allowed to use a cell phone during working hours? Explain your reasoning.
NEVER.
- It takes away from our ability to monitor students safely and effectively.
- It also puts you at risk for students to see something personal on your phone.
- It can be distracting to you
- If you found out some emotional news, it could impact your affect on the floor
- It shows the kids that you're not invested in caring for them
